April is Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month

Eye injuries can occur at any time, but the frequency of those related to sports and recreation are at much higher rates.  According to the U.S. Eye Injury Registry, fishing is the number one cause of sports-related injuries.  However, 90 percent of serious eye injuries can be prevented by using appropriate protective eyewear.  Regular eyeglasses do not provide adequate protection.  Keep in mind that all eye injuries are not sports related alone and can happen even at home while doing yard work, home repairs, cleaning, etc…  Therefore, it is important that the type of eye protection one uses is appropriate for the specific activity.

March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month and Eye Donor Awareness Month

In the Workplace

While working each day, almost 2000 people injure their eyes.  One third of these injuries require a visit to the emergency room.  Three out of five workplace eye injuries occur because proper eye protection is not being worn. When working in or around a harmful environment, proper eye protection should be worn at all times to help prevent eye injury, no matter how minor or serious.

Being an Eye Donor

Have you ever considered becoming an eye donor upon death?  Anyone can be an eye donor regardless of age, quality of vision or a history of cataracts.  If you wish to give someone else the gift of sight, it is important to inform family members of your wishes.  Below is a website that contains additional information about being a donor.

What is Astigmatism?

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a condition that causes your vision to be blurry at any distance and is a very common condition. The causes are either due to irregular shaped corneas or the curvature of the lens inside the eye, which prevents light from focusing properly on the retina. Slight amounts of astigmatism don’t usually affect a person’s vision and don’t require treatment. Larger amounts cause the vision to be distorted or blurred. Astigmatism often occurs with other vision conditions like nearsightedness and farsightedness; these conditions are referred to as refractive errors. Treatment for astigmatism includes wearing corrective eyeglasses, specially designed hard or soft contact lenses or by LASIK surgery.  Astigmatism can also be treated during cataract surgery by two different options.  One option is a Limbal Relaxing Incision or LRI, which is a small incision(s) made to help relax the cornea and help correct its misshaping.  Another option is a special cataract lens called a Toric Lens, which is an intraocular lens that corrects for astigmatism.

If you have astigmatism and have considered treatment, please call Eye Center South at 1-800-NEW-EYES, to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Marnix Heersink, Dr. Sebastian Heersink, Dr. Zsolt Bansagi, Dr. William Bennett or Dr. Amanda Matthews to see if you are a candidate for treatment.  Eye Center South, Dothan, Andalusia, Panama City, Destin and Albany.

May is Better Hearing Month: Discover Your Hearing!

It Is National Better Hearing Month!

Among the five senses we rely on, hearing allows us to not only enjoy life but also to perform the necessary things we need to live safely.  It is essential to most work and recreational activities and permits us to communicate more fully.  The ability to hear is a fundamental part of life that many people take for granted.

More than 2.5 million cases of hearing impairment are reported annually in the United States.  However, most hearing loss goes undiagnosed and untreated.  Permanent hearing loss can result from repeated exposure to noise at hazardous levels such as noise from firearms, rock music, portable MP3 players with headphones, jet airplanes, lawn mowers, power tools and many others. Approximately 30% of the people over age 65 and 70-80% over 75 years of age have significant hearing impairment.  Baby boomers (49-66 years of age) are showing increased hearing loss at earlier ages.

Many people are aware that their hearing has deteriorated but are reluctant to seek help. There are many reasons why they choose to wait.  Maybe they are embarrassed to admit that they have a problem.  Maybe they feel like they can get by without it and wait years, even decades to get help.

There are considerable negative social, psychological, cognitive, and health issues associated with untreated hearing loss.  Hearing loss can affect quality of life. Elderly people with a hearing impairment experience reduced mobility, reduced involvement in social activities, and loneliness.
