Do you suspect that you have Dry Eye?

Are you suffering with unbearable symptoms such as; burning, tearing, foreign body sensation, and blurred vision? If so, than you might be suffering with chronic dry eye.Chronic dry eye can be an unbearable eye condition that can potentially become very difficult to treat.  It’s secondary to a decrease in the amount of tears, increased loss of tears, and never-ending inflammation, which causes a decrease in the quality of tears.  All of these factors add to a poor tear film.  In order for your eyes to be functioning properly, they require a healthy tear film and without it, you will not see your best.

If you feel you have been living with dry eyes, call our Eye Center South to schedule an appointment with one of our Board-Certified Ophthalmologist in one of our five locations – Eye Center South Dothan, Panama City, Destin, Albany or Andalusia at 800-467-1393

What Type of Glaucoma Are You Suffering From?

The common awareness is that glaucoma refers to just one form, but the term actually describes a group of eye diseases that can distress the optic nerve and damage your vision. Understanding and diagnosing the different types of glaucoma allows our Eye Center South Team to set up an effective treatment plan and protect your vision from further deterioration. It is important to note, however, that glaucoma is not a curable disease, but can be delayed or the further progression can be stopped through treatment. The type of glaucoma diagnosed will affirm the treatment method that is necessary and how closely patients will continue to be monitored. Because early onset glaucoma typically has no symptoms, it’s vital that you undergo routine eye examinations to ensure that you maintain the health of your eyes.  Through a glaucoma evaluation, we can determine the degree and type of eye disease that you are suffering from. If you are experiencing symptoms associated with glaucoma, including loss of peripheral vision or tunnel vision, please contact Eye Center South at 800-467-1393 to schedule an appointment with one of our Board-Certified Glaucoma Specialists, Dr. Kirk Sturridge or Dr. Anthony Leoncavallo. The earlier treatment is sought, the better the chance of preserving your vision.– Eye Center South Dothan, Panama City, Destin, Albany or Andalusia.

Eye Injuries Associated with Sports

There are many different causes for vision loss other than common eye diseases. One type of vision loss is through ocular trauma caused by sports injuries. Did you know that the sport most associated with eye injuries is basketball? Abrasions to the face and eyes are quite common, although more serious, retinal tears and detachments can also occur. Accidents can be avoided with the use of goggles, although they are seldom used unless the athlete has had a previous injury. The next sport most associated with ocular trauma is soccer due to direct kicks to the eye resulting in corneal abrasions, orbital fractures, and sometimes damage to the retina. Basketball and soccer are just two examples of sports that involve injuries, but accidents can occur with many sports activities. Remember that prevention is key and it is very important to protect your vision by wearing protective sport goggles. If you are someone you know experiences any type of eye injury, please call Eye Center South at 800/467-1393 to schedule an appointment with one of our Board-Certified Ophthalmologist in one of our five locations – Eye Center South Dothan, Panama City, Destin, Albany or Andalusia.

There are three main categories – or packages – for cataract patients to choose from at Eye Center South:

Our Standard Cataract Package, our Custom Cataract Package and our Premium Cataract Package. Below is a brief description of each package.

Standard Cataract Surgery provides patients conventional cataract measurements and the basic single focus lens implant. Most patients choosing our Standard package will require prescription glasses to see clearly up close and in the distance after surgery

Our Custom Cataract Package includes special testing, measurements, surgical techniques and lens implants designed to improve your night driving ability, correct your astigmatism, fine tune your surgical result and reduce or eliminate your need for glasses for distance vision.  This category is ideal for patients who want to restore their confidence to drive at night or have been told they have astigmatism.

Our Premium Cataract Package at Eye Center South includes additional testing and measurements and specially designed lens implants to help you see clearly at both near and distance with little or no dependence on prescription eye wear. This package also includes laser vision enhancement to fine tune your result if necessary and make you as independent from prescription eye wear as possible.

Our staff will work together with you to help you decide which one of our cataract packages best suits your needs. Although your general health and the overall condition of your eyes play a critical role in lens selection, your lifestyle – and the role your eyes play in the activities you enjoy most – should also play into your selection.

“Four very common eye diseases diagnosed by Ophthalmologists today”

Cataracts are one of the most common eye diseases diagnosed by ophthalmologist today.  Cataracts are when the natural lens of the eye becomes clouded and causes vision to deteriorate. Another common eye disease is glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease in which pressure within the eye becomes elevated causing the optic nerve to sustain serious injury. The third common eye disease is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is when the circulation of the retina in the back of the eye becomes compromised, generally due to poor control of blood sugar. This may in turn, cause swelling and hemorrhaging in the retina which can cause loss of vision. Lastly, ARMD is an eye disease that causes deterioration in the part of the retina called the macula. The macula is responsible for your central vision, in which allows for reading, driving, and facial recognition. It is not rare for an individual to be diagnosed with all four of these diseases at the same time, and for that reason, the physicians of Eye Center South encourage individuals to have a thorough eye exam yearly.  To make your appointment today with one of Board Certified Ophthalmologist, please contact us at 334-793-2211.  Eye Center South – Dothan, Andalusia, Albany, Panama City and Destin.

“Surprising Medical Causes of Hearing Loss”

“Surprising Medical Causes of Hearing Loss”

There are many health conditions that are not directly connected to the ears that you wouldn’t think would result in hearing issues.  Some of the health conditions are quite common, such as diabetes and hypertension, both of which affect one-third of the U.S. population. Because diabetes and hypertension impair the cardiovascular system, the nerves and blood vessels of the inner ear can become damaged and hearing diminished.

This kind of hearing loss, which occurs due to problems with the inner ear (cochlea), is called sensorineural. Sensorineural hearing loss also encompasses hearing loss that results from damage to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain (the auditory nerve) or to the central processing centers of the brain.  Usually permanent and irreversible, sensorineural hearing loss can generally be treated with the use of hearing aids or cochlear implants.

By contrast, conductive hearing loss is mechanical in nature, stemming from problems in the outer or middle ear.  This includes damage to the three tiny bones of the ear or to the eardrum.  For example, health conditions that  cause fluid in the middle ear can lead to conductive hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss can often be reversed medically or surgically.

It is possible to have both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, or what is called mixed hearing loss.  So make a conscious effort to have your hearing checked every year.

“Hearing Loss Claims In The Work Place & Preventative Ways To Minimize Noise Exposure”

Hearing loss remains a significant problem in certain noisy industries. In particular, federal data shows the average rate of job related hearing loss among private sector employees has steadily declined in recent years.  That trend may reflect the exclusion of certain industries from the calculation, or it could be a sign that ongoing efforts to reduce excessive noise exposure, train workers about the dangers of  high levels of noise, and provide them with hearing protection.

Noisy work environments can cause hearing loss that is compensable under state and federal workers’ compensation laws.

Preventing or minimizing noise exposure, of course, is the best way to reduce rates of hearing loss and presumably, the claims it generates.

Did You Know That Over 360 Million People Have Hearing Loss?

According to new global estimates on the prevalence released by the WHO, more than 360 million people in the world have disabling hearing loss.  One in three persons over the age of 65 years old live with hearing loss and another 32 million affected are children under the age of 15.

Did you know that infections of the ear are the leading cause of children affected with hearing loss?  Some of the infectious diseases that cause hearing loss is rubella, meningitis, measles and mumps.  Most of these diseases can be prevented through vaccination. Some other common causes of hearing loss consist of being exposed to excessive noise, injuries to the head or ear, aging, genetic causes and problems during pregnancy.

Half of most cases of hearing loss could have been easily prevented, while many can be treated if caught in the early stages and diagnosed.
