An implantable collamer lens, or ICL, is placed inside the eye to correct vision without removing the natural lens or permanently reshaping the cornea. The lens is not visible or noticeable once it is in position.

ICL may be considered for younger adults with moderate to severe nearsightedness, astigmatism, or corneas that are not ideal for laser treatment. Candidates typically need a stable prescription and healthy eyes.

RLE for Age-Related Vision Changes

Refractive lens exchange, or RLE, replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens. The procedure is performed similarly to cataract surgery, although the natural lens may still be clear at the time of treatment.

RLE may be recommended for patients experiencing presbyopia or significant farsightedness, especially when LASIK, PRK, or ICL would not provide the desired correction. Because the natural lens is replaced, the treated eye cannot develop a cataract later.
