Eye Injuries Associated with Sports

There are many different causes for vision loss other than common eye diseases. One type of vision loss is through ocular trauma caused by sports injuries. Did you know that the sport most associated with eye injuries is basketball? Abrasions to the face and eyes are quite common, although more serious, retinal tears and detachments can also occur. Accidents can be avoided with the use of goggles, although they are seldom used unless the athlete has had a previous injury. The next sport most associated with ocular trauma is soccer due to direct kicks to the eye resulting in corneal abrasions, orbital fractures, and sometimes damage to the retina.

Basketball and soccer are just two examples of sports that involve injuries, but accidents can occur with many sports activities. Remember that prevention is key and it is very important to protect your vision by wearing protective sport goggles. If you are someone you know experiences any type of eye injury, please call Eye Center South at 800/467-1393 to schedule an appointment with one of our Board-Certified Ophthalmologist in one of our five locations – Eye Center South Dothan, Panama City, Destin, Albany or Andalusia.
