Have I Waited Too Long to Have LASIK Surgery? Are There Other Options For Me?

Generally, those patients that have LASIK under age 40 are able to see great without the use of glasses or contacts. When presbyopia sets in during our 40s, anyone with great distance vision begins to have trouble with close up vision. For those patients that have had laser eye surgery or laser vision correction, they will need reading glasses just like a patient with great distance vision who has not had LASIK. There is currently no procedure to prevent presbyopia or to correct presbyopia. Some patients who are over 40 desire monovision where one eye sees for distance and one eye sees for close. If this is acceptable to the LASIK patient, it is reasonable to proceed this way. But even with monovision, one eye functions for one distance and the other for near.

The surgeons at Eye Center South recommend that patients use trial contact lenses to see if monovision is a fit for them before they proceed with this option. Dr. Marnix Heersink, Dr. Zsolt Bansagi and Dr. Sabastian Heersink at Eye Center South perform many LASIK procedures on patients who are over the age of 40, but it is extremely important that those patients keep in mind that while their distance vision will be great, at some point in life they may need help for near. Everyone is affected by presbyopia at different stages, so it is unpredictable when the need for reading glasses might arise. LASIK after 40 is still a great trade off for many patients. For patients who defer LASIK after 40, don’t be discouraged! There is still a great permanent solution for you to have a greater than 90% chance to be glasses free after surgery with advanced Lifestyle Lenses.

So, what procedure is right for you?  To determine this, call today to schedule a FREE evaluation with one of our Board-Certified Refractive Surgeons, Dr. Marnix Heersink, Dr. Zsolt Bansagi or Dr. Sabastian Heersink here at Eye Center South at 1-800-NEW-EYES.
