Do You Suffer From Ocular Migraines?

Do You Suffer From Ocular Migraines?

Although ocular migraines are more common in women, this neurological condition can happen to anyone. Some symptoms of these migraines are visual, such as seeing lightning bolts, kaleidoscope images, or zigzag lines. However, other symptoms can also include nausea, light sensitivity, and vomiting associated with severe head pain. Unfortunately, it is not known what exactly causes ocular migraines. Scientists believe that it could be a result of an abnormality in the transmission of serotonin which could cause blood vessels to constrict and reduce oxygen supply to the brain. There are also certain foods that are believed to trigger these migraines including cheese, alcohol, aspartame, chocolate, and caffeine. Ocular migraines can be treated by either avoiding specific triggers or with medications such as Imitrex, Maxalt, Amerge, and Zomig.

If you are experiencing symptoms of ocular migraines it is important to see your primary care physician as well as your ophthalmologist. If you would like to schedule an appointment with one of the Board-Certified Ophthalmologists at Eye Center South, please call 800-467-1393 today.
