Do you have chronically red eyelids? If so, you may have a condition known as Blepharitis. Blepharitis is caused by an inflammation of the eyelid that can result in itchiness, redness, crusting, and discharge of the eye. This inflammation is a result of an overgrowth of bacteria on the eyelid. Although we all have this type of harmless bacteria on our skin, it becomes a problem when a large amount of it accumulates in one specific area. Blepharitis is closely related to Rosacea, which is a common skin disease that affects areas of the face. Blepharitis can also be compared to dandruff, since it often results in dandruff-like scales around the eyelashes. Some ways to cope with this disease are to use warm, damp compresses on the eyelid followed by a light scrub to remove bacteria and loosen debris. There are also ointments and drops for the eye that are very effective in treating this condition.
